Planned industrial suburbs are nevertheless the most obvious manifestation of urban industrial expansion. A particular feature of Ancoats was the creation of areas of laid-out streets, whilst in Rouen the industrial quarter was developed on the left bank of the Seine and both demonstrate dedicated industrial zoning to some degree. Barcelona is perhaps the most extreme example of a changed cityscape.27 The walls, replaced by broad avenues and palaces designed by major architects such as Gaudi and Puig I Cadafalch, transformed cramped medieval Barcelona into a modernist city. The realisation of the plan by Cerdá formalised the social geography of the city and with it the stratification of society. In the north-east lies Parc Guell, originally designed as an upper-class garden suburb isolated from the city core, whereas the overwhelming 19th-century grid iron, which dominates the city, was the domain of the middle classes, who lived in geometric blocks, modelled on the famous cemetery. The defences of the medieval city were transformed into the Rambla, a fashionable centre for promenades. Finally the lower classes were confined to the decaying medieval city, which perhaps explains why so much of the medieval quarter survives intact. Barcelona, more than any of the other cities, was a stratified city and the quarters and buildings reflect this class division.28 Manchester, Rouen and Ghent never achieved such stratification and the ‘lords, industrial magnates and tenants’ remained more closely integrated into the cityscape, as topographical and building surveys indicate.
